Narrow thoroughfares necessitate smaller vehicles. In Florence, eco-friendly half size buses traverse the cobbled streets with ease. People ride bicycles, motorcyles, motor scooters and drive Smart cars (unsafe on major roads, I would guess). School buses are compact. Trucks have 3 wheels. Street cleaners are miniature. People walk briskly in the morning and stroll in the evening.
